Resilience to Pests & Disease
“Insects and disease are nature’s garbage collectors.” These types of organisms have limited digestive abilities compared to our complex digestive tracts. They have a difficult time breaking down complex carbohydrates and proteins, opting for simple sugars instead. Often, plants are deficient in a number of minerals and are forced to produce simple compounds in order to survive, making them very attractive to these organisms. When a plant is getting all of the nutrients it needs in proper ratios, they are able to create complex compounds for themselves and become unattractive to insects and disease causing organisms.
